Abstract

Although the significant proportion of individuals with disabilities in society has been documented by various statistics, the factors that encourage consumers to visit food and beverage establishments employing people with disabilities have received limited attention in the literature. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates the factors influencing consumers’ intention to visit such establishments. Specifically, the explanatory roles of attitudes toward people with disabilities, perspective taking, and emotional intelligence are examined. Data were collected from 282 consumers with experience in food and beverage businesses and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The findings indicate that perspective taking and positive attitudes toward people with disabilities significantly increase consumers’ intention to visit establishments employing individuals with disabilities. Emotional intelligence was also found to have a strong positive effect on both perspective taking and attitudes toward people with disabilities. The findings provide important theoretical and practical implications for promoting the employment of individuals with disabilities in the hospitality industry.
