Abstract
Oils essential for sustaining human life are obtained from both plant and animal sources. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an oilseed crop widely cultivated worldwide and occupies a significant place in agricultural production. However, numerous pests, diseases, and weed species cause significant yield and quality losses in sunflower production. Among these, plant parasitic nematodes and insect pests are of particular importance. Globally, several nematode species are known to infest sunflower, but root knot nematodes belonging to the genus Meloidogyne spp. are responsible for the most severe damage. In addition, Agriotes spp. commonly known as wireworms, represent another group of soil borne pests that damage the root system. These pests directly injure plant roots, thereby impairing plant growth and leading to significant yield reductions. While chemical control remains widely used against these pests, environmentally friendly alternative management strategies have gained increasing attention in recent years. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Laurus nobilis (Lauraceae) laurel plant extract against Meloidogyne incognita and Agriotes spp. in sunflower plants. The experiment was carried out in pots under outdoor conditions and the plant extract was applied simultaneously with nematode and insect infestation, and then on days 15, 30, and 45. The experiment was completed after 90 days, and plant growth parameters and the effects against the nematode and insect pest were evaluated.According to the results obtained, the lowest plant height was recorded in the M. incognita+Agriotes spp. treatment, whereas the lowest head diameter and head weight were observed in the M. incognita+L. nobilis treatment. The treatments with the lowest number of second-stage juveniles in the soil and the lowest reproduction rate were M. incognita+L. nobilis+Agriotes spp. In conclusion, given that the applied treatment is considered safer for both the environment and human health, it may serve as an alternative to conventional pesticide use in pest management and provide a basis for future research.
