Abstract

Financial failure is evaluated within a wide range, from the partial or complete failure of a firm to meet its obligations in due time to bankruptcy. This issue becomes even more critical, especially in times of crisis, since it can lead to the complete termination of the firm. Hence, in this study, both the probability of financial failure for firms in the context of the Altman Z-score and its potential impact on selected financial performance ratios are analyzed. Both book-based and stock market-based performance ratios are considered for the analysis. In context of the research objective, the sample scope is limited to the retail trade sector. In the development of this sector, the rapid digital transformation process accompanying the economy, which was adversely affected especially during the pandemic period, has been an opportunity on one hand, while also demonstrating the importance of the sector’s stable performance and resilience at both for the economic and social levels on the other hand. In the study, the interaction of financial failure and selected financial performance indicators for the retail trade sector is analyzed by panel data methods. For the analysis, quarterly financial statements and stock exchange data of 6 firms traded on BIST for the period 2016-2024 are taken into consideration. In addition to the Altman Z-score, net profit margin and asset size variables are also taken into account so as to analyze their potential effects on financial performance indicators by the panel ARDL method. According to the findings, the Z-score has positive and statistically significant effects on return on equity and the price-to-book value.
