Abstract

This study articulates the socioeconomic and cultural configuration of the ancient city of Laodicea Katakakeumene /Combusta, a key case in discussions of urban rural interaction in Anatolia, based on assessment of the epigraphic dossier recovered from the urban nucleus and its territorium. The city corresponds to the modern town of Ladik, 45 km northwest of Konya. Founded during the Seleucid period, the city occupied a strategically influential position along a transregional corridor linking Anatolia with Northern Syria and Mesopotamia, and its location together with a productive hinterland enabled Laodicea to sustain significance in the Roman period. Ancient literary testimonies concerning Laodicea remain limited, yet the inscriptions unearthed across the region furnish critical evidence for reconstructing its social, economic, and cultural structures. The material points to a settlement at the junction of Lycaonia, Pisidia, and Phrygia, operating within a cultural matrix configured by extended interaction, mobility, and assimilation; anthroponyms of Greek, Latin, and Galatian origin instantiate this multidimensional environment while revealing permeability within identity formations. Religious life, evident in successive pagan and Christian phases, mediated the regional socioeconomic landscape, and cultic practices, ritual behavior, and institutional frameworks consolidated communal hierarchies, economic distribution, and mechanisms of authority, indicating a trajectory anchored in regional connectivity and a religious sphere shaping regional dynamics.
