Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the neurodevelopmental status of preterm infants with Denver Developmental Screening Test II (DDST II) and Bayley III tests and to compare them with term healthy infants. Materials and Methods: Medical records of patients who presented to our outpatient clinic between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2019 with a history of preterm delivery and were followed-up in the Mersin University neonatal intensive care unit were investigated. Bayley III and DDST II tests were applied. Results: A total of 80 preterm infants with 48 being boys and 32 girls and age, gender, sociodemographic features matched 80 healthy infants as the control group were included in this study. DDST II and Bayley III tests were more commonly abnormal and suspected in the patient group. The scores received from fine motor, gross motor, language and personal social areas of DDST II were significantly lower in the patient group compare to the control group; and cognitive, fine motor, gross motor, receiver language and expressing language scores of the Bayley III were significantly lower in the patient group compared to the control group. Conclusion: DDST II and Bayley III tests scores were lower in the preterm infants compared to the control group. Neurodevelopmental follow-up of preterm infants with DDST II and Bayley III tests can provide early detection of developmental retardation.
