Abstract

Safety plays a pivotal role in visitors’ experiences in the tourism sector, both physically and psychologically. Crisis events occurring in hotels—particularly fires—can directly shape tourists’ safety perceptions and become a decisive factor in their hotel choice behavior. This study aims to investigate the effects of hotel fires on tourists’ safety perceptions and hotel choice. Employing a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 participants recruited through snowball sampling. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis, which yielded four main themes: (1) General Tourism and Hotel Selection Criteria, (2) Hotel Fires and Safety Perceptions, (3) Hotels’ Safety Measures and Expectations, and (4) Future Expectations and Recommendations. The findings reveal that both the fire incidents and their media representations intensify tourists’ safety concerns, trigger a substantial shift in safety awareness, and elevate fire safety considerations to a prominent position among hotel selection criteria. Moreover, participants call for hotel management to adopt transparent, visible, and enforceable safety policies, strengthen staff training programs, and enhance regular inspection mechanisms. The study highlights that crisis events in the tourism sector generate not only short-term impacts but also long-term changes in tourists’ perceptions and preferences, thereby underscoring the necessity for strategic and proactive safety management in hotel businesses.
