Abstract

This study examines the effects of large-scale disasters in Türkiye during the 2015Q1-2025Q2 period, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic and the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, on international trade. Quarterly import and export data for Türkiye are used, and the effects of these disasters on foreign trade are tested through structural break analyses. First, the Perron (1989) and Lee-Strazicich (2003) unit root tests with structural breaks are applied, followed by the Bai-Perron (2003) multiple structural break test. The findings indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on foreign trade. Significant structural breaks are identified in both export and import series in the second quarter of 2020. This suggests that the pandemic negatively affected trade volume in the short run, followed by a marked recovery in subsequent periods. The Bai-Perron (2003) results show regime changes in two periods for exports and four periods for imports, and identify 2020Q2 as a common break period for both series. By contrast, no significant structural break is detected in the import and export series after the February 6, 2023 earthquakes. Overall, the pandemic had a more pronounced effect on foreign trade, while the earthquake effect appears more limited in aggregate trade data.
