Abstract

Imam al-Māturīdī, who is considered to be the imam of one of the two itiqad / kalam sects under Ahl al-Sunnah and has made a great influence on the Islamic world, was born in the Māturīd neighborhood of Samarqand and in 333/944 died also in Samarqand. Unfortunately, it is not much that has come to this day about his life; however, it is possible for us to have a general image of the intellectual environment of the time in Samarqand city, capital of the Mawarannahr, in which this significant scholar of Islam lived his whole life through a number of main resources and research works. As a matter of fact, there were some early forms of madrasas (schools) in Samarqand and the cities around it in the Samanids period, while there was not really even the thought of it in the capital cities and centers like Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo. At the time of al-Māturīdī, there were some important madrasas in the city like Dār al-Juzjāniyya, Dār al-Iyādiyya, Qusam b. Abbās. Also, intellectual studies were really important for the Samanid rulers. So, the archives and the libraries of the palace were always open to the scholars. Moreover, the city has kept its characteristic as being a melting pot of lots of different cultures, religions and thoughts in Islamic period, too. It can be argued that, despite the fact that this mixed cultural structure of the city has led to emergence of some new ways of thinking, they actually contradict with the Islamic thought/faith, it has also provided a great environment for Imam al-Māturīdī and many Islamic scholars of Kalām to emerge in this region.
