Abstract
The relationship between virtue and politics has been one of the most debated topics in political thought from antiquity to the present day. In ancient Greece, virtue (aretē) was defined through honor, heroism, and warrior values, while within the Platonic-Aristotelian tradition it acquired a more philosophical and intrinsic character. In the Roman period, virtue (virtus) gained meaning within the context of civic consciousness and became linked to heroism and warrior values. During the Roman Republic and Empire, it deepened philosophically through thinkers such as Polybius, Cicero, and Seneca. In medieval Christian political thought, the understanding of virtue was integrated with divine elements. But over time, influenced by the legacy of Ancient Greece, it also incorporated elements of the classical understanding of virtue. Machiavelli’s concept of virtù represents a turning point in this historical trajectory. His understanding of virtue (virtù) excludes moral and philosophical elements, relying instead on practical qualities such as political effectiveness, skill, cunning, and determination. Additionally, he contrasts the concept of virtù with ‘fortuna,’ which represents unpredictability and variability. The aim of this study is to examine Machiavelli’s understanding of virtue through the lens of the concepts of virtù and fortuna, comparing it with understandings of virtue in antiquity and the classical period, revealing similarities and differences between them, and analyzing the transformation of political power in accordance with changes in understandings of virtue. This study uses the methods of content analysis and comparative analysis.
