Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, which is involved in many areas of life, has also gained a place in education. It is important to promote AI literacy by determining the AI technology literacy of students who are part of the education system. For this, there is a need for measurement tools that help to measure AI literacy effectively. This study aims to develop a valid and reliable Artificial Intelligence Literacy Scale (AILS). The participants of the study were middle school students studying in two different city of Turkey. The scale was tested through exploratory and confirmatory analyses (EFA and CFA). The EFA results revealed that the scale consisted of 15 items and three factors, namely Know-Understand, Apply-Evaluate and Ethics. This structure explains 60.92% of the total variance. This structure was validated with a first-order and second-order multifactor model. The Cronbach's alpha values and test-retest results of the validated AILS and its sub-dimensions showed that the scale has high reliability. This scale fills an important gap in the AI literature in Turkey and provides researchers with a validated tool to measure students' AI literacy
