Abstract

This study aimed to develop the "Overmothering Scale in Early Childhood" to determine the interest of mothers to children and their expectations from them with 54-72 month old children in early childhood. The population consists of mothers with children aged between 54 and 72 months who attend public schools in Istanbul. There are two different sample groups (460 mothers in exploratory factor analysis and 416 mothers in confirmatory factor analysis) determined by simple random method in the research. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, it was determined that the scale had a 5-factor structure consisting of 39 items. The subscales of the scale are named as “anxious motherhood, perfectionist motherhood, motherhood in constant pursuit of knowledge, competitive motherhood in education, and helicopter motherhood”. The measurement tool explains 54.415% of the variance. As a result of internal consistency reliability analysis, Cronbach's Alpha value was found to be .904. Item-total correlations ranged between .215-.692, and item-remainder correlations ranged between .200-.669. According to the confirmatory factor analysis results, X2/sd value, one of the goodness-of-fit index values, was excellent; It was determined that RMSEA, SRMR, CFI, IFI values showed good fit. It was observed that NFI, NNFI (TLI), RFI values were very close to good fit. In line with all other analyses, it was concluded that the scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool.
