Abstract
This study aims to identify the positioning and historical trajectory of H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine within the Turkish literary system by considering all accessible Turkish translations of the work. Rather than focusing on textual features, the study analyses publishing practices, circulation indicators, and bibliographical data in light of polysystem theory. The bibliographical corpus of the research consists of the first Turkish translation of the work and its retranslations. The data were primarily collected through the National Library Catalogue. Subsequently, all translations available on the Nadir Kitap platform were added to the list, and their presence or absence in the National Library Catalogue was identified. Translations not listed in the National Library were further checked through the KOHA Library Automation System to determine their availability. The table compiled within the scope of the study includes indicators such as the year of publication, publishing house, translator information, number of pages, series/category information, and whether the translation appears in the National Library Catalogue. Period-based positioning was supported by archival research, and discrepancies in series or category information were resolved by examining cover images of the relevant editions. These material indicators identified publishing strategies and systemic positioning practices. The findings are evaluated within the limitations of this bibliographic analysis conducted on a single work. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that The Time Machine underwent a shift in its systemic position through translation and retranslation practices, and in this respect, it may be considered both a constitutive and a transformative example. The historical trajectory of The Time Machine in this case supports, with concrete bibliographic evidence, the claim that a translated text may occupy not a fixed but a mobile and continuously redefinable position within the polysystemic structure.
Özet
Bu çalışma, H. G. Wells’in Zaman Makinesi adlı eserinin Türk yazın dizgesi içindeki konumlanmasını ve tarihsel seyrini, eserin Türkçede ulaşılabilen tüm çevirilerini göz önünde bulundurarak tespit etmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
