Abstract

The aim of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the dubbing and subtitling translations of the English, French, and Turkish versions of the first three seasons of the Netflix series Emily in Paris within the context of multilingualism. The study draws on the strategies proposed by Díaz Cintas (2011) for the translation of multilingual audiovisual products, as well as the subtitling strategies developed by Díaz Cintas and Remael (2007, 2021). The contexts in which multilingualism is employed throughout the first three seasons of the series are examined together with their narrative functions. The analyses demonstrate that multilingualism makes linguistic and cultural differences between American and French cultures visible while foregrounding language play, humor, cultural conflict, and tension. In addition, the characters’ language choices and code-switching practices provide significant insights into identity construction, social status, and personality traits. The findings reveal that the multilingual structure is largely preserved in the English version, whereas scenes and dialogues in the French version are reconstructed. While multilingualism is maintained in French dubbing, linguistic diversity is largely homogenized in the subtitles. In the Turkish version, multilingualism is partially preserved in the subtitles, whereas a partial homogenization strategy is adopted in dubbing. Although this facilitates target audience reception, it also leads to the weakening and erasure of linguistic differences and cultural references. In this respect, the study demonstrates that translation strategies should be evaluated not as opposing but as complementary approaches in interaction with multimodal elements and that translators’ use of dynamic and creative strategies in line with the type, content, and function of the audiovisual product plays a critical role in the transfer of multilingualism. Given the increasing presence of multilingual elements in audiovisual products, it is anticipated that this study will contribute to future research in the field.
