Abstract
This study aims to examine the representation of archaeological heritage of the Caria Region in Turkish cinema and to analyze how ancient sites are constructed and assigned meaning within cinematic narratives. Drawing on films selected from a roughly forty-year period, from the 1970s to the early 2000s, the research examines archaeological sites across three analytical dimensions: their function within the narrative, their associated contexts, and the meanings they produce. The findings indicate that archaeological spaces are predominantly presented and circulated as aesthetic and touristic images; however, in a more limited number of cases, they function as sites of excursion that establish a relationship with characters while remaining detached from everyday life. These representations are closely linked to post-1970s tourism policies, the development of mass tourism, and the production practices of Yeşilçam. In the case of Bodrum, archaeological heritage is incorporated into a strong visual regime intertwined with the sea, nature, and a touristic lifestyle; in contrast, less frequently represented ancient cities can assume more flexible and diverse functions in cinema. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the cinematic representation of archaeological heritage in the Caria Region cannot be explained through a singular model, but is instead shaped by recurring tendencies related to tourism, popular culture, and conditions of production.
