Abstract

Individuals with severe and multiple disabilities often experience limited participation in leisure activities due to their complex support needs. However, leisure and recreational activities play an important role in supporting multidimensional development, rehabilitation, and social integration. Accordingly, this study aims to examine educators’ perspectives on the rehabilitative effects of leisure activities for students with severe and multiple disabilities. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 special education teachers, and the data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings were organized under three main themes: leisure activities, effects, and recommendations. Leisure activities included indoor and outdoor activities, while the effects theme involved rehabilitative, social, emotional, behavioral, academic, psychomotor, and communicative dimensions. Recommendations focused on rehabilitation, social skills, behavior management, academic and psychomotor skills, implementation, and support. The findings indicate that leisure activities contribute to multiple developmental areas and hold a significant rehabilitative role in special education practices for students with severe and multiple disabilities.
