Abstract

Mehmet Eroğlu’s novel Issızlığın Ortası (In the Midst of Solitude) (1984) is one the rare works in Turkish literatüre that addresses the devastating effects of trauma on the individual not only on an ideological level but also with clinical depth. This study examines the severe traume experienced by the protagonist, Ayhan İlyasoğlu, through the lens of “somatic language”, where the body intervenes at the point where verbal language proves insufficient. The violence witnessed by Ayhan during the Cyprus Peace Operation and the “survivor’s guilt” he suffers have led to a speech disorder that transcends traditional narrative forms. In this study, Ayhan’s symptoms; such as stomach cramps, loss of voice, physical contortion and spatial dissolution at Lake Tuz are analyzed in light of the works of prominent figures such as Bessel van der Kolk, Judith Herman and Elaine Scarry.

Özet

Mehmet Eroğlu’nun Issızlığın Ortası (1984) adlı romanı, Türk edebiyatında travmanın birey üzerindeki yıkıcı etkilerini sadece ideolojik bir düzlemde değil, aynı zamanda klinik bir derinlikte ele alan nadir eserlerden biridir. Bu çalışma, romanın baş kişisi Ayhan İlyasoğlu’nun yaşadığı ağır travmayı, dilin yetersiz kaldığı noktada bedenin devreye girdiği “somatik dil” düzleminde incelemektedir. Ayhan’ın Kıbrıs Barış Harekâtı sırasında tanık olduğu şiddet ve yaşadığı “hayatta kalan suçluluğu”, geleneksel anlatı formlarını aşan bir konuşma bozukluğuna yol açmıştır. Çalışmada, Ayhan’ın mide krampları, ses yitimi, bedensel bükülme ve Tuz Gölü’ndeki mekânsal çözülme gibi semptomları; Bessel van der Kolk, Judith Herman, David Le Breton, Alfred Adler ve Elaine Scarry gibi isimlerin eserleri ışığında çözümlenmiştir.
