Abstract

Internalism and externalism are opposing approaches to how epistemic statuses are acquired. Internalists evaluate epistemic statuses in relation to the subject’s perspective, while externalists argue that epistemic statuses are independent of the subject’s perspective. These two currents of contemporary epistemology also hold different positions on how statuses are lost, in addition to how they are acquired. Beliefs, information, or true propositions that lead to the loss of an epistemic status are referred to as epistemic defeaters. A theory must be able to explain not only how epistemic status are acquired but also how it can be lost. However, explanations of the nature of epistemic defeaters present difficulties for these theories. This study examines the difficulties that epistemic defeaters pose for internalist and externalist theories and argues that these theories actually have different epistemic goals. Specifically, the role of epistemic defeaters is attempted to be explained through the connection between propositional and doxastic justification. The subject must possess objectively strong evidence and base their beliefs solely on this evidence. Accordingly, a justification relationship in necessary between the evidence a subject possesses and the reasons they use for their belief. While internalist and externalist approaches may not agree on the direction of this relationship, they agree on its existence. However, the problems they face stem from this. Because the basing relation between the two ways of justification is related to different epistemic situations. Once this independence is accepted, a new understanding on the nature of the debate can be developed.
