Abstract

Distance education is used for a wide variety of purposes as a support or alternative to face-to-face education. Given that distance education has become more frequent since the pandemic and is perceived differently by every teacher, this study aims to examine the personal meanings teachers attribute to it through metaphors. This is a qualitative study designed as a phenomenological study. A total of 184 teachers working in various high schools in the central districts of Antalya province were reached, in accordance with purposive sampling. Participating teachers were asked to produce one metaphor for distance education and to write an explanation following "because" that corresponds to their metaphor. The data were analyzed using content analysis, one of the qualitative data analysis methods. Participants produced a total of 153 valid metaphors related to distance education. The valid metaphors were interpreted by dividing them into 6 different categories in terms of their analogy. The category with the most metaphors produced in the study was "Distance Education in Terms of Teacher-Student Interaction and Communication" with a rate of 39.2%. According to the study results, various opinions have been put forward regarding the effectiveness of distance education. While 13.7% of the participants viewed distance education as an effective alternative to face-to-face education, 22.2% metaphorically perceived the system as partially effective, and 11.2% as an ineffective alternative. According to the study results, in order to ensure that teachers, who are one of the fundamental building blocks of education, have positive perceptions of distance education systems, it is necessary to identify the source of the problems in practice. In this context, identifying the needs and problems in distance education applications in light of user experiences and conducting studies on the solution of these problems is extremely important for the effectiveness of distance education systems.
