Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the motor skills and quality of life of young Syrian refugees between the ages of 14-18 and citizens of the Republic of Turkey (TR) living in Şanlıurfa. A total of 189 volunteer youth, 95 male (T.C.= 50, Refugee= 45) and 94 female (T.C. = 55, Refugee = 39), randomly selected among the secondary school students aged 14-18 living in Şanlıurfa in the 2021-2022 academic year, participated in the study. The motor skills of the participants were determined by the Deutscher Motoric Test (DMT), and their health-related quality of life was determined by the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). Independent groups t test was used to determine the difference between groups. According to the results of the analysis of the data, it was determined that the flexibility and standing long jump performances of the girls of the TR were statistically significantly higher according to both genders of refugee, and the total scores of 20 m sprint, push-ups and DMT for refugee boys compared to both genders of citizens of the TR. As for the quality of life results; It has been determined that the girls who are citizens of the TR have statistically significantly higher scores in all parameters of the PedsQL compared to their gender. In addition, it was determined that both Syrian refugees and Turkish citizens were in low categories in motor skill categorization. As a result, it can be said that there is no deficiency in motor skills of male asylum seekers compared to the Turkish citizens of both genders, since the TR provides the refugee youth with the opportunity to use educational and sports areas, and the refugee youth spend most of their life time in the TR. The fact that refugee girls have lower motor skills and quality of life than youth citizens of the same sex may be due to the fact that women are more affected by the migration, the restriction of youth refugees from participating in leisure activities due to their culture, and the pressure of this society on women and the more roles they place on women.
