Abstract

Teaching is far more than just being a profession that is about transferring a series of information; teaching is a profession that also involves the goal of adding value to the younger generations. Teaching and ethics are concepts that are like two sides of the same coin. This study, designed based on these ideas, aims to determine the impact of professional attitude adopted by the science teacher candidates attending to Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Education on their inclination to academic fraud. The study used screening model. 128 teacher candidates attending to Cumhuriyet University, Department of Science Teaching on the academic year of 2016 – 2017 participated to this research. “Attitude towards Teaching Profession Scale” and “Inclination to Academic Fraud Scale” were used as data collecting tool. Based on the collected data, Ttest was used to determine student’s attitudes towards the teaching profession and whether they vary based on gender or not, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine teacher candidates’ inclination to academic fraud and the connection between their attitude towards the teaching profession and inclination to academic fraud was established with correlation analysis. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the attitude points of teacher candidates towards teaching profession are above the average; there is a significant different in favor of the female teachers in terms of attitude points based on gender; they are slightly inclined to academic fraud and there is a connection between attitude towards teaching profession points and sub dimensions of inclination to academic fraud scale.Teaching is far more than just being a profession that is about transferring a series of information; teaching is a profession that also involves the goal of adding value to the younger generations. Teaching and ethics are concepts that are like two sides of the same coin. These two concepts should be dissociated due to the nature of ethics and education. An ideal teacher should not only have perfect teaching skills but also function as a moral role model setting an example with his/her lifestyle. In other words, a teacher is an ideal person who lives by his/her teachings. The researchers concluded that if teacher candidates have positive attitude towards their professions, they will fully perform their duties when they come teachers; they will encourage investigative and creative way of thinking; they will motive students easily and convey both verbal and non-verbal messages to the students in harmony as well as effectively using their time and being open to innovation. As for the studies on academic fraud; factors such as not considering cheating in an exam as a unethical behavior, desire to be successful in course, grade anxiety, homework, projects, negative attitudes of teachers, exams requiring memorization, failing to understand the course, psychological pressure of the family are considered as the leading causes of plagiarism and cheating. It is argued that the using inclination of academic fraud in educational and training activities with the fast growing technology will have impact on teacher candidates. We have not come across any such research in the related literature. Purpose This study aims to determine the impact of professional attitude adopted by the science teacher candidates attending to Cumhuriyet University, Faculty of Education on their inclination to academic fraud. Teacher training is a vital aspect of determining attitudes of teacher candidates towards their professions and the impacts of such attitudes. It is thought that the findings of this study will guide educators, researchers and preparation of teacher training programs. Method The research used screening model. Findings For testing the first sub problem of the research and based on the findings obtained from data; it was observed that teacher candidates’ attitude towards teaching profession points are above the average (3,974). We can say that there is a significant statistical difference in favor of female teacher candidates in terms of attitude points based on gender. As for the second sub problem, it was observed that when general average points are reviewed, the average points are between 1.80 and 2.59 and, in other words, the teacher candidates are slightly inclined to academic fraud. We can say that there is no statistically significant connection between gender and sub dimensions of academic fraud inclinations. According to the findings obtained related to the third sub problem, there is a very strong negative connection between the teacher candidates’ attitude towards teaching profession and “inclination of fraud in studies such as homework, project” and “inclination of fraud related to references” and a high negative connection with “inclination to cheat in the exams”. It was observed that there is a low positive connection in terms of sub dimension of inclination to fraud in research and reporting process. Discussion & Conclusion Hoy and Wolfolk (1990) argued that feelings and attitudes adopted towards the profession, as a vital aspect of professional socialization experience by teach candidates throughout the training process as well as converting theoretical knowledge, a determin
