Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the stabilityof the Discovering Intellectual Strengths and Capabilitiesthrough Observation while allowing forVaried Ethic Responses (DISCOVER) assessment, when used across time, to identify 74 Diné gifted children, and the Raven’s Progressive Matrices (RPM),when used across time, to identify 52 Diné gifted children.Students were tested when they were in the second, third, and fourth grades. An analysis of the datausing three methods (viz., calculating the change differenceson each student’s scores, obtaining correlationcoefficients, and applying a linear single regressionanalysis across the three testing periods) providesevidence of the stability of three of the five DISCOVERactivities—Spatial Analytical, Spatial Artistic, and Oral Linguistic, as well as the overall score. Theoverall DISCOVER score provides greater evidence ofstability than do students’ scores from the RPM,which varied from year to year. Based on the resultsof this study, the authors concluded that the DISCOVERassessment is a culturally fair instrument, andis more appropriate when used to identify Diné giftedchildren than traditional tests. Future researchers mayconsider conducting a long and large-scale longitudinalinvestigation into the same research problem, aswell as designing a mixed-method study to investigatehow Diné children understand the RPM problemsto highlight any potential cultural components.
