Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate Turkishpre-service elementary school teachers’ reasons forincluding or not including a student to gifted education programs through eleven profiles (hypotethicalscenarios) originally created by five American experts in the field of gifted education. The originalprofiles were translated and adapted to be morerelevant to Turkish culture. These profiles werenamed “Student Profiles Survey” in this study. Theprofiles were varied based on characteristics embedded in each profile and I was able to create eightversions (piles) of the Student Profiles Survey. Thedata of this study was derived from a bigger study.Only qualitative part of the bigger data set was reported in this study. Participants of the study were16 Turkish pre-service elementary school teacherswho were attending two colleges of Education at auniversity located in Southeast of Turkey. Afterfilling the survey, Turkish pre-service teachers wereinterviewed to explain their reasons to include/ notinclude the students in the survey to gifted educationprograms. Turkish pre-service elementary schoolteachers explained their reasons for including thestudents in the profiles to gifted education programsmostly based on the personal, academic, and socialcharacteristics of the students embedded in the profiles but they did not often referred students’ characteristics when they were explaining their reasons forexclusion. Rather than explaining their reasons basedon characteristics of the students, Turkish pre-serviceteachers increased their expectations and createdexcuses to underestimate the potentials of the students in the profiles when they were asked to explaintheir reasons for exclusion.
