Abstract

This research investigates the position of the Ottoman Empire on thedhimmis (non-Muslim, particularly Christian and Jewish, citizens of anIslamic State) and the good treatment which they received since they became under its control. One of the areas which the present research examines is the city of Jerusalem in the eighteenth century as what applies to this city can also apply to all other cities of the Ottoman Empire. The research also studies the population, including the Christian and the Jewish, and places of their residence and distribution in the city. It also demonstrates the relationships between these two population groups and Muslims. Theresearch also sheds light on the economic condition of these communities, their commercial and agricultural real estate, their endowments, and theamounts and types of taxes imposed on them
