The Effect of Experimental Applications on Academic Achievement in the Learning of Genetics

Özet

Bu çalısmada, orta ögretim programındaki biyoloji derslerinde yer alan genetik konularını ögrenmede ögrenci basarısını etkileyen deneyleri yapabilme durumları incelenmistir. Bu baglamda yapılan anket sonucunda üç grup deneyleri: a) uygulamalı (laboratuvarda) gerçeklestiren, b) kuramsal olarak isleyen, c)hiç görmeyen ve kuramsal olarak islemeyen ögrenciler olarak belirlenmistir. Çalısmanın ikinci asamasında da gruplar arasında akademik basarı yönünden anlamlı bir fark olup olmadıgı arastırılmıstır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, genetik konularının etkin ögreniminde deneysel çalısmaların ögrenci basarılarını etkiledigini göstermistir. Ayrıca, deneyleri laboratuvar ortamında gerçeklestiren ögrencilerin basarı ortalamaları ile, deneyleri kuramsal olarak isleyen ve hiç deney yapmayan ögrencilerin akademik basarıları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark oldugu görülmüstür.

Abstract

This study examines the conditions of lab applicability of experiments that may affect student success in the learning of genetics in biology classes at secondary school curriculum. The results of the questionnaire, which was designed to elicit how experiments are treated in class, revealed three groups of students: those who a) apply experiments in labs, b) study experiments on a conceptual basis, and c) are not neither exposed to the experiments nor taught experiments conceptually. In the second part of the study, whether these groups differ significantly with regard to academic achievement is investigated. The results revealed that there is a correlation between the effective learning and the application of experiments in labs. Furthermore, there is significant difference in the average success of students between group (a) on one hand, and (b) and (c) on the other.
