Abstract

The present article aims at investigating Anaxagoras’ conception of nous. In this respect, B12 which is the longest extant fragment of Anaxagoras will be given special treatment in accordance with the idea that nous does not only imply the physical conditioning of the being but also at a metaphysical explanation of material existence. In this respect, it will be argued that nous itself becomes both a physical and a metaphysical-causal means of explanation. By focusing on the central argument which emphasises nous’ ‘being in everything’, it will be argued that nous presents a central explanation with regards to the physical, material and ‘natural’ existence of beings and the metaphysical, essential limits of a being’s potential of coming-into-being and the characteristics of the actualisation of it. In this respect, it will be construed that in contrast with the traditional interpretations which consider nous as a concept loaded with difficult attributions and as a mere physical disposition, nous emerges a cosmiccognitive faculty in Anaxagoras’ thought which is positioned as a teleological principle, or tendency and it appears to take on the form of an onto-teleological explanatory cause. In conclusion, it will be considered that Anaxagoras’ physical attributions to nous are highly related to the being’s teleological potentials which not only signals at a meta-physical ‘ending’ but also at a ‘beginning’ of an onto-ethical discussion regarding Anaxagoras’ conception of nous.
