Abstract
Though Democritus, who is one of the pre-Socratic philosophers, is widely known with his atomic theory, this article discusses Democritus in terms of his view on morality. Democritus, thinking differently in his era, traveled many places like India, Abyssinia and Iraq in order to reach the knowledge. Though he has materialistic ideas on ontology, he comes up with an idealistic perspective on morality. There are important fragments of his in terms of the issue of morality. These fragments are also referred to as maxims of wisdom. In this maxims, Democritus mentioned virtue, temperance and balance. In this matters, he states that reason has an important role. While he expresses what should be the connection of human beings with life, he thinks that, in general, human desires can be restrained by reason. There are also fragments on the issue of adoption. He mentions that the idea of raising an offspring is a tendency that can be resolved by adoption. Actually, Democritus seems to have indicated that raising child should be preferred over adoption. Basically, it is known that no one can have a child or raise a child without his personal will. According to Democritus, having a child does not constitute a situation that can be controlled and can meet the personal demands of the human being. Therefore, adoption is more important than having and raising a child for Democritus. In this article, Democritus' views about adoption will be discussed in the context of the fragments.
