Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of determining the views of faculty members of sports science faculties and schools of physical education and sports about current problems of Turkish sports and proposals of possible solutions. In the study, the phenomenological pattern, which is one of the qualitative research approaches, was used. The work group consisted of 10 faculty members, 5 of which were members of sports science faculties, and the other 5 were members of schools of physical education and sports. A semi-structured interview form, which comprised of open ended questions, was employed for data collection in the study. During the analysis of collected data, 4 different processes were utilized, whose names are “bracketing”, “phenomenological reduction”, “imaginary diversification” and “synthesis of meaning and essence”. According to the findings, Turkish sports’ problems and their suggested solutions were gathered in 5 categories such as problems related to state policy, administrator problems, facility problems, trainer problems and academic problems. The participants indicated the problems of Turkish sports as: lack of adequate communication between stakeholder entities, lack of planning sports facility constructions and shortcomings in repairing existing facilities, lack of qualified club managers, inability of trainers’ know-how to meet current needs. The proposed solutions to these problems by the faculty members were; employment of sports management graduates, who will perform duties in a club such as control and reporting of operations and strategic and quality planning; careful consideration of a region’s population and the numbers of schools, students, clubs and athletes in that region, climate, transportation and statistical data from existing facilities while planning a sports facility construction; strengthening the communication between academicians and sports managers. It was emphasized that The Ministry of National Education, The Council of Higher Education and The Ministry of Youth and Sports should review the sports policies in coordination, and the impact of the necessity to change on the development of Turkish sports.
