Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine in which teacher candidates perform better, where combinations of portfolio and multiple choice achievement test are used. A further concern of this study is to determine whether there is a significant relationship among social studies teacher candidates' portfolio scores and achievement test scores, and whether these scores differ depending on gender. This quantitative study is consisted of 127 social studies teacher candidates who took "Special Teaching Methods" course in 2013-2014 academic year at a state university. The data collection instruments were achievement test and student portfolios. In the analysis of the data, Spearman Correlation Technique and Mann-Whitney U Test were conducted. Depending on the research findings, it was found that a substantial number of students were evaluated more favorably on their portfolio assessments than on the achievement test assessment. The findings of this study can be interpreted that the portfolio assessment is a success-oriented evaluation system and it can increas students' chance of having successful learning experiences at school. In addition, a significant relation between the portfolio and the achievement test scores was found. Moreover, female teacher candidates' portfolio scores were found to have more significant difference compared to those of their male teacher candidates.
