Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between burnout and ego states and the role of ego states on burnout in student teachers. The descriptive survey model was used in the study. A total of 332 third (n = 110) and fourth (n = 222) grade undergraduate students included 90 male and 242 femalestudying in different departments at the Faculty of Education in Pamukkale University participated to the study. Maslach Burnout Inventory (Student Form) and Ego States Scale were used to gather the data. Pearson Correlation and linear regression analyses were performed to analyze the data. Results showed that emotional exhaustion was related positively with critical parent, golden child and rebellious child ego states, negatively with nurturing parent and adult ego states; cynicism was related positively with critical parent, natural and rebellious child ego states, negatively with nurturing parent and adult ego states; low personal accomplishment was related negatively with nurturing parent and adult ego states. In addition regression analyses indicated that emotional exhaustion was predicted meaningfully by critical parent, adult, golden and rebellious child ego states; cynicism was predicted by critical parent, adult and rebellious child ego states; low personal accomplishment was predicted by adult ego state. The findings presented many important cues about parents’ child rearing attitudes, quality of educational environments, effectiveness of programs and educators’ communication competences. In the study implications of the findings were discussed and suggestions were given for the educators
