Abstract

Recent advances in aesthetic restorations have driven significant improvements in dental adhesive systems. Depending on the clinical approach of the smear layer produced by cavity preperation, three mechanisms of adhesion are currently in use with modern dentin adhesive systems. Although there is a tendency to simplify bonding procedures the data presented confirm that conventional three step etch & rinse adhesives still perform most favorably and are most reliable in the long term. Nevertheless a self etch approach may have the best future perspective. Especially mild, two step self-etch adhesives that bond through a combined micromechanical and chemical interaction with tooth tissue closely approach conventional three step systems in bonding performance. Another development in adhesive dentistry is antibacterial dentin bonding systems. The aim of developing antibacterial dentin bonding system is to inhibit invading bacteria after the placement of restorations as well as residual bacteria in the cavity. Finally, novadays there are a lot of adhesive systems that has different properties, but these adhesive systems effectiveness must be determined with long term studies.
