Abstract

While the urban population is increasing worldwide, social, economic and environmental problems continue. In such a context, cities need to be smart as well as sustainable, and sustainable as well as smart for a sustainable world. In line with this requirement, the smart sustainable city approach, which combines the concepts of smart city and sustainable city, has developed in the last decade. Along with this, the need to evaluate efforts of cities in this direction using solid indicators has emerged. The aim of this study was to examine smart sustainable city key performance indicators developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the International Telecommunication Union and to make an assessment in the case of Trondheim City, which was analyzed according to these indicators. According to the study, performance indicators provide a standard method for cities that want to be smarter and more sustainable. Based on these indicators, Trondheim demonstrates good performance in all dimensions, including economy, environment and society, in the process of transforming into a smart and sustainable city, and contributes to sustainable development goals. However, the city needs to make improvements in transportation, water and sanitation infrastructure, public buildings sustainability, social participation and security.
