Abstract

This study investigates the impact of cognitive flexibility among top management team members on the quality, understanding, and commitment associated with strategic decisions. The research was conducted through a survey of 357 senior executives from 77 firms operating across various sectors in Türkiye, and the data were analyzed using hierarchical regression analysis. The findings reveal that executives with higher levels of cognitive flexibility tend to make strategic decisions that are of higher quality, better understood, and elicit stronger commitment. This study represents one of the first empirical investigations to directly examine the relationship between cognitive flexibility and strategic decision outcomes. By integrating cognitive flexibility into the literature on strategic decision-making, the study offers a novel perspective on how individual-level cognitive capabilities shape team-level strategic decision outcomes. Moreover, it stands out as a pioneering quantitative study addressing this relationship within the Turkish context. The results highlight the critical importance of developing managerial competencies such as cognitive flexibility to enhance the effectiveness of strategic decision-making processes.
