Perceptions of Science, Technology, Instructional Material, Information-Communication and Teaching Profession from Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers’ Perspective

Abstract
The aim of this study is to reveal the cognitive perceptions of prospective social studies teachers with the help of five basic concepts emphasized in today's social studies curriculum using the word association test. The data of the study were collected from the 158 prospective social studies teachers in a state university in the Central Anatolia Region in the fall semester of 2017-2018 academic year. Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Prospective teachers were posed with five key concepts; Science, Technology, Teaching Material, Information-Communication and Teaching, and frequency tables were created with the various words that these key concepts awakened in them. When the relationship between key concepts was examined, it was concluded that prospective teachers established a direct relationship between two key concepts (Science and Technology) while they could not establish a direct relationship among the other key concepts (Teaching Material, InformationCommunication and Teaching). The fact that the number of words prospective teachers associate with these key concepts is quite extensive and this proves that the social studies course is a multidisciplinary field of study. It may be recommended that perceptions of teachers and prospective teachers about more specific subjects from different learning areas in the social studies discipline should be investigated in further studies
Özet
Bu araştırmada amaç, günümüz sosyal bilgiler öğretim programında vurgulanan bilişim ve öğretmenlik mesleği kavramları ile ilişkili sayılabilecek beş temel kavram yardımıyla Sosyal Bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının Kelime İlişkilendirme Testi kullanarak bilişsel algılarını ortaya çıkarmaktır. Araştırmanın verileri 2017-2018 eğitim-öğretim yılı güz döneminde iç anadolu bölgesindeki bir devlet üniversitesindeki sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarından toplanmıştır. Öğretmen adaylarına bilişim ve öğretmenlik mesleği ile ilişkili olarak; Bilim, Teknoloji, Materyal, Bilgi-İletişim ve Öğretmenlik olmak üzere beş kavram yöneltilmiş ve bu anahtar kavramların onlarda uyandırdığı çeşitli kelimelerle frekans tabloları oluşturulmuştur. Öğretmen adaylarının anahtar kavramlarla ilişkilendirdikleri kelime yelpazesinin geniş olmasında, sosyal bilgiler dersinin multidispliner bir çalışma alanı olmasının etkili olduğu söylenebilir. Anahtar kavramlar arasındaki ilişki durumu incelendiğinde öğretmen adaylarının sadece iki anahtar kavram (Bilim ve Teknoloji) arasında doğrudan ilişki kurdukları, diğer anahtar kavramlar arasında ise doğrudan bir ilişki kuramadıkları dikkat çekici olmuştur.
