THE ELEMENTS CONSTITUTING ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE: ANALYSIS OF “DIE WELLE (THE WAVE)” FILM

ÖRGÜT KÜLTÜRÜNÜ OLUŞTURAN UNSURLAR: “DIE WELLE (TEHLİKELİ OYUN)” FİLMİ ANALİZİ

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the elements constituting the organizational culture through Die Welle (The Wave) film. The method of the research is qualitative. A document review study has been implemented for this purpose. The group commitment of the members in the Wave group mentioned in The Wave film has been investigated in the conducted analysis through the elements of organizational culture. According to this, the scenes that are thought to include the organizational culture elements of Wave group are respectively associated with symbols, norms, values, heroes, assumptions, and beliefs. 27 scenes that are thought to be related to the research subject have been determined in the film. Among these scenes, there are three scenes associated with values, two with assumptions, five with norms, twelve with symbols and stories, two with beliefs, and three with heroes. There are more scenes related to symbols in the film. Mr. Wagner, the cultural hero of the group, is the person directly affecting assumptions and beliefs among the elements of organizational culture. He has provided a certain system of beliefs and assumptions to the group, and then he has watched them by supporting little guidance. This belief system has increased the group commitment and the value supplied by them to the group membership in a short period of time. Values developed with beliefs have brought the group norms and symbols together. Class rules and group participation rules have been generated. The logo belonging to the group, original greeting style, and web site have been promoted. In conclusion, it can be stated that The Wave film can be used for the audience as a learning material related to what may be the elements of organizational culture. This present research can be considered as an opportunity for educators and the ones concerning about education so as to interrogate their culture and their existing knowledge about organizational culture. The research may be recommended to be used in the lectures including organizational culture and as an instructional material in the faculties.

Özet

Bu araştırmanın amacı örgüt kültürünü oluşturan unsurların Die Welle (Tehlikeli Oyun) filmi üzerinden incelenmesidir. Araştırmanın yöntemi niteldir. Bu amaçla doküman incelemesi çalışması gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan analizlerde Tehlikeli Oyun filminde konusu geçen Dalga grubunun üyelerinin gruba bağlılıkları örgüt kültürü unsurları ile incelenmiştir. Buna göre Dalga grubunun örgüt kültürü unsurlarını içerdiği düşünülen sahneler sırasıyla; semboller, normlar, değerler, kahramanlar, varsayımlar ve inançlar ile ilişkilidir. Filmde araştırma konusu ile ilgili olduğu belirlenen 27 sahne belirlenmiştir. Bu sahnelerin üçü değerler, ikisi varsayımlar, beşi normlar, on ikisi semboller ve öyküler, ikisi inançlar, üçü kahramanlar ile ilgilidir. Filmde en fazla semboller ile ilgili sahneler yer almaktadır. Grubun kültürel kahramanı olan Bay Wagner, örgüt kültürü unsurlarından varsayımlar ve inançları doğrudan etkileyen kişidir. Gruba belirli bir inanç sistemi ve varsayımı aşılayarak arkasına yaslanıp ufak yönlendirmelerle olanları seyretmiştir. Bu inanç sistemi dalga grubu bireylerinin gruba bağlılığını ve grup üyeliğine verdikleri değeri kısa bir sürede geliştirmiştir. İnançlar ile gelişen değerler grup normlarını ve sembollerini beraberinde getirmiştir. Sınıf kuralları ve gruba katılım kuralları oluşturulmuştur. Gruba ait amblem, özgün selamlama tarzı, internet sitesi geliştirilmiştir. Sonuç olarak Tehlikeli Oyun filminin izleyenlerine örgüt kültürünü oluşturan unsurların neler olabileceği ile ilgili bir öğrenme materyali olarak kullanılabileceği söylenebilir. Araştırma eğitimcilere, eğitimle ilgilenenlere örgüt kültürü bilgilerini, kültürlerini sorgulamaları için birer fırsat olarak görülebilir. Çalışmanın örgüt kültürünü içeren ders anlatımlarında, fakültelerde bir öğretim aracı olarak kullanılması önerilebilir.
