Abstract

Menderes district is 20 km south of Izmir. The history of the district goes down to the Roman period. The district has been the scene of various construction activities in the Aydınoğulları and Ottoman periods of the Anatolian Principalities. Samancıoğlu Mosque is located in the district center of Cüneyt Bey Street. The square planned, cubicbodied mosque has a three-unit end of north. The mosque was built by Hacı Veli in 1565-66 and the mosque is surrounded by “U” graveyard from the east, west and south directions. There are seventy headers stone and twenty two footers stone. Thirty eight of the them are belong to male graves and twenty of them belong to female graves. Since two stones were broken, it could not be determined who belonged to the gravestone. The sixty five tombs in the building belong to the Ottoman period and five to the early Republican period. The earliest dated tomb in Samancıoğlu Mosque, belongs to the daughter of Süleyman Ağa, dated 1740-41. The latest dated tomb is dated to 1931 and belongs to Osman Balcı. The graveyard is closed to the new burial. In this study, the transcriptions of the gravestones were made, and the identity, country and profession information of the grave owner were reached. It is seen that the texts containing the stereotyped head, prayers and wishes in the gravestones are also preferred in these gravestones. The repertoires of the decoration of the head and feet are discussed and their place in the Anatolian samples are discussed. The garvestones, which have preserved their document characteristics, have an important place in archival documents due to being single copies. In this respect, it is of great importance to identify, catalog and analyze these works in accordance with the Art History methodology.

Özet

Menderes ilçesi, İzmir’in 20 km güneyindedir.
