Assessment of Geography Teachers According to Opinions of Geography Teacher Candidates

Abstract

Students and teachers are two of the important elements of teaching activities in schools. No matter what kind of suitable programs, books and class environments you prepare, as long as the teachers are not sufficient you cannot achieve the desired efficiency in education and teaching activities. The teachers have always occupied an important role, with their instructive role in the past and their guidance role today. The purpose of this study is to derive ideas regarding prominent positive and negative teaching characteristics of geography teachers working in Samsun Province. In this study a survey including open ended questions was used as data collection method. The purpose for collection of relevant data by open ended question by a survey rather than one-on-one interviews is to reach opinions of more teacher candidates regarding teachers. In this context, opinions of 52 teacher candidates were collected regarding 18 teachers of varying genders who work at differing types of school. It is attempted to determine positive and negative characteristics of geography teachers and determine relevant frequencies of these based on the responses to the open ended questions in the survey. Prominent positive teaching characteristics of the subject teachers emerge as good communication, use of sufficient material and techniques, use of a clear and understandable language and utilisation of smartboards. Prominent negative teaching characteristics of some of the subject teachers emerge as failure to establish authority, limiting lecture activities to certain students and failure to use sufficient amount of material. However, according to study results, the number of teachers displaying prominently positive characteristics is more than the number of teachers displaying prominently negative characteristics in education and teaching in our schools.

Özet Öğrenci ve öğretmen okullardaki öğretim faaliyetlerinin en önemli unsurlardır. Eğitim ve öğretim açısından ne kadar uygun programlar, kitaplar ve sınıf ortamları hazırlarsanız hazırlayınız öğretmenleriniz yeterli olmadıktan sonra eğitim-öğretim faaliyetlerinden istenilen verimi alamazsınız. Geçmişte öğretici ve şimdi ise yol gösterici yönü öne çıkan öğretmenler hep önemli olmuştur. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Samsun ilinde görev yapan coğrafya öğretmenlerinin öğretim açısından öne çıkan olumlu ve olumsuz özellikleri hakkında fikir üretmektir. Çalışmada veri toplama tekniği olarak açık uçlu soruların bulunduğu anket kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada açık uçlu soru ile ilgili verinin görüşme tekniği kullanılarak değil de anket yardımıyla elde edilmesinin nedeni; öğretmenler ile ilgili daha fazla öğretmen adayının görüşüne başvurmaktır. Bu bağlamda; cinsiyetleri ve görev yaptıkları okul türleri farklı 18 öğretmen ile ilgili 52 coğrafya öğretmen adayının görüşüne başvurulmuştur. Anketteki açık uçlu soruya verilen cevaplar sayesinde coğrafya öğretmenlerinin öne çıkan olumlu ve olumuz özellikleri belirlenmeye verilmeye çalışılmıştır. İletişimlerinin iyi olması, yeterince materyal ve teknikten yararlanmaları, açık ve anlaşılır bir dil kullanmaları ve akıllı tahtalardan yaralanmaları araştırmaya konu olan öğretmenlerin öğretim ile ilgili öne çıkan olumlu özellikleridir. Otoriteyi sağlayamama, belli öğrenciler ile ders işleme, yeterince materyal kullanmama öğretmenlerin bir kısmı ile ilgili öne çıkan olumsuz öğretmen özellikleridir. Ancak araştırma sonuçlarına göre okullarımızda eğitim-öğretimle ilgili olumlu özellikleri öne çıkan öğretmenler, olumsuz özellikleri öne çıkan öğretmenlere göre daha ağırlıklıdır.
