Problems Faced by Elementary Mathematics Teachers in Their Professional Lives

Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the problems faced by primary school mathematics teachers in their professional life. The study is a case study in which qualitative research method is used. Working under three mathematics teachers who work in the eastern provinces of Turkey were conducted semi-structured interviews. Participants were selected using the criterion sampling method, and as a criterion, teachers were required to work in both a provincial and central school, and have completed at least 7 years in the profession. The collected data were analyzed by content analysis method. While analyzing the data, participant speeches were presented in the form of quotations in the findings section without any comments by the researcher. As a result of the analysis of the findings of the study, two main themes were formed, namely, problems related to the teaching profession and problems related to the branch of mathematics. In the results of working; Primary school mathematics teachers have been found to have problems in various situations such as classroom management, lack of time, lack of training, off-duty work and operations, abstract structure of mathematics, teachers 'social status, students' indifference towards the course and technological problems.
Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı ilköğretim matematik öğretmenlerinin meslek yaşantılarında karşılaştıkları sorunları belirlemektir. Çalışma nitel araştırma yönteminin kullanıldığı bir durum çalışmasıdır. Çalışma kapsamında Türkiye’nin bir doğu ilinde görev yapmakta olan üç ilköğretim matematik öğretmeni ile yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Katılımcılar ölçüt örnekleme yöntemi kullanılarak seçilmiştir ve ölçüt olarak öğretmenlerin hem taşra hem de merkezi bir okulda çalışmaları ve meslekte en az 7 yılını doldurmaları aranmıştır. Toplanan veriler içerik analizi yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Veriler analiz edilirken katılımcı konuşmaları araştırmacı tarafından yorum yapılmadan bulgular kısmında alıntı şeklinde sunulmuştur. Çalışma bulgularının analizi sonucunda öğretmenlik mesleğine yönelik sorunlar ve matematik branşı ile ilgili sorunlar olmak üzere iki ana tema oluşturulmuştur. Çalışma sonucunda; ilköğretim matematik öğretmenlerinin, sınıf yönetimi, süre yetersizliği, konuların yetişmemesi, görev dışı iş ve işlemler, matematiğin soyut yapısı, öğretmenlerin sosyal statüsü, öğrencilerin derse karşı ilgisizliği ve teknolojik problemler gibi çeşitli durumlarda sorunlar yaşadıkları saptanmıştır.
