Teachers’ Views Regarding the Process of Using Children’s Literature in Mathematics Teaching

Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the views and experiences of the participants, within the scope of a project carried out on the use of children's literature in mathematics teaching. For this purpose, 23 participants included in the study using case study design, one of the qualitative research approaches and they were asked for the selection criteria of the books they used in the integration process of mathematics teaching and children's literature, the possible positive or negative effects of this integration on students and their views and experiences on preparing the lesson plans. The data were collected through open ended questions and analyzed with descriptive analysis. According to the findings, the participants believed that the integrated mathematics lessons with children's literature will have a positive effect on the cognitive and affective characteristics of the students, and they have difficulty in finding suitable books for the subject and the acquisitions.
Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı farklı eğitim kademelerinde görev yapan öğretmenlerin, matematik öğretimi ve çocuk edebiyatı bütünleştirmesine ilişkin görüş ve deneyimlerinin incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla nitel araştırma yaklaşımlarından durum çalışması deseni kullanılmıştır. Çalışmaya konuyla ilgili bir öğretmen eğitimi projesine katılan 23 kişi dâhil edilmiştir. Katılımcılara matematik öğretimi ve çocuk edebiyatı bütünleştirmesiyle ilgili olarak kitap seçim ölçütleri, bu bütünleştirmenin öğrenciler üzerinde yaratacağı etkilere ilişkin görüşleri ve son olarak ders planı hazırlamaya dair görüş ve deneyimleri sorulmuştur. Araştırmanın verileri araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen açık uçlu sorular aracılığıyla toplanmış ve betimsel analizle incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre katılımcıların matematik öğretimi ve çocuk edebiyatı ile bütünleştirilen derslerin öğrencilerin bilişsel ve duyuşsal özelliklerine olumlu etkileri olacağına inandıkları ve bütünleştirme süreci için konu ile kazanımlara uygun kitaplar bulmakta zorlandıkları görülmüştür. Araştırmanın bulguları doğrultusunda öneriler sunulmuştur.
