Student Satisfaction as an Indicator of Quality in Higher Education: A Scale Development Study

Abstract

Measuring student satisfaction in higher education has begun to be usedas an important data source for strategic planning andqualityassessmentsince2015.Bymeasuringstudent satisfaction, higher education institutions are able to identify their strengths and weaknesses and obtain important data for service quality enhancement activities. The aim of this study is to develop a scale that will measure the satisfaction levels of university students in a valid and reliable manner. This study is a scale development study designed to be carried out in the process of increasingthe qualityofeducation,research,socialcultural activities and other services offered by Ahi Evran University. A total of 2083 students attending Ahi Evran University participated in this study during the spring semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. Exploratory factor analysis was performed because the scale items were applied for the first time. The result of the explanatory factor analysis reveals 62.01% of the total variance of the six factors emerging. Cronbach's alpha value of all factors on the scale is higher than .70. In addition to this, the correlation of all factors on the scale with each other is statistically significant. Yüksek öğrenimde öğrenci memnuniyetinin ölçülmesi, 2015'ten bu yana stratejik planlama ve kalite değerlendirmesi için önemli bir veri kaynağı olarak kullanılmaya başlamıştır. Yüksek öğrenim kurumları, öğrencilerin memnuniyetini ölçerek, güçlü ve zayıf yönlerini belirleyebilir ve hizmet kalitesi artırma faaliyetleri için önemli veriler elde edebilir. Bu araştırmanın amacı üniversite öğrencilerinin memnuniyet düzeylerini geçerli ve güvenilir bir şekilde ölçen bir ölçek geliştirmektir. Bu çalışma, Ahi Evran Üniversitesi tarafından verilen eğitim, araştırma, sosyal kültürel etkinlikler ve diğer hizmetlerin kalitesini arttırma sürecinde gerçekleştirilmek üzere tasarlanmış bir ölçek geliştirme çalışmasıdır. Bu çalışmaya 2016-2017 akademik yılı bahar döneminde Ahi Evran Üniversitesine devam eden toplam 2083 öğrenci katılmıştır. Ölçek maddeleri ilk kez uygulandığından araştırmada faktör analizi yapılmıştır. Açımlayıcı faktör analizinin sonucu, ortaya çıkan altı faktör toplam varyansın %62.01'ini ortaya koymaktadır.
