Abstract

The Italian community in Anatolia has always played a very important role in its commercial, cultural and political life since the early Ottoman Empire and it continued to play an important role duringthe Republican time (Karakartal, 2002, 2003; Ortaylı, 2007; Zuccolo, 2011). The prestige that theItalian language enjoyed in this geographical area throughout the different historical periods may beone of the main factors that helped this small and fragmented Italian community maintain its identityfor nearly 900 years (Misir di Lusignano, 1990). The focus of this paper is to examine the role playedby the Italian schools in Istanbul in the maintenance of their native language and therefore thenational identity and the intimate connection with the motherland (Iacobellis 2007, Ortaylı 2007)that this particular community enjoys. This paper will provide a small historical excursus on thelanguage and education of the Italian community in Istanbul. Starting from the foundation, of whatwould be described in modern terminology as a “study group”, by the Società Operaia, in 1864(Iacobellis 2007; Pannuti 2006, 2007) and concluding with the fact that many Italian Schools wereopened and later unfortunately closed due to the demographic trend of the community revealing adiminution after the thirties which was due to the impact of political decisions made on foreignlanguage medium primary schools following the Lausanne Treaty in 1923. As a final conclusion, thepaper will present and comment on the data, testifying a recent revitalization of the interest of theCommunity for Italian language medium schools.
