Abstract
In this article, the concept of ethos was used to highlight the three characters' identity traits as well as their ethos in Huis clos by Jean-Paul Sartre (1947). The ethos borrowed from ancient rhetoric was later introduced in various disciplines of the social and human sciences. Ethos is one of the elements constituting the triad proposed by Aristotle: logos, ethos, pathos. In the discourse analysis, ethos is used in the sense of self-image or self-presentation that the speaker constructs during the exchange. Dominique Maingueneau distinguished between the discursive ethos and the prediscursive (or prior) ethos on the one hand, and the said ethos and the shown ethos on the other. Sartre attributed to his three characters such different ethos that they can never get along with each other. Garcin, Inès and Estelle coming from very different social backgrounds and having life stories that are not alike meet for the first time in hell. Two of these characters, Garcin and Estelle, try to present themselves by highlighting attractive character traits, but without succeeding in building a credible ethos in the eyes of Inès, who, for her part, is distinguished by her authentic ethos. and lucid. Ultimately, Inès differs from others by exhibiting an ethotic concordance while Estelle's ethos, her opposite, is discordant. As for Garcin, it is an ethotic oscillation that testifies to his status as a heteronomous subject. In the analysis from the ethotic point of view, we used parameters such as intentionality, authenticity, semantic and semiotic roles.
