Abstract
The English course is taught for two terms as a compulsory course at the faculties of education in Turkey. This study has been carried out in order to determine the current levels of English of the teacher candidates and their levels of success at the end of the term, taking the schools they graduated from into consideration. A total of 345 teacher candidates, who are currently studying at five different departments at the Burdur Faculty of Education have participated in this study. The study continued during the fall term of the 2004-2005 academic year. The data obtained from the study show that the teacher candidates improved their levels of English at the end of the term. However, it is mentioned that the classes are heteregenous as no level of classification has been made and that this might have negative effects over the efficacy of English courses. Some recommandations towards the solution of this problem are also offered. Finally, minor subject applications are discussed and it is suggested that the minor-subject regulations are to be reconsidered.
