Testing the Impact of Text Type Differences on the Comprehension Abilities of Reading (Ankara University Sample)

Abstract

This study has been applied to the students who have been studying in Primary Teacher Department in Ankara University. The purpose of this research is to test students’ comprehension abilities of what they read, and research the impact of text type differences on the comprehension abilities of what is read. The study group of the research consists of 80 teacher candidates who have been studying at the second class of Primary Teacher Department of Ankara University in Turkey. In this study, “Descriptive Method” has been used and data has been collected by the test technique. The literature was examined by researcher in order to support the data obtained by the test technique. The percentage, frequency and arithmetic mean have been used in the analysis of the students’ wrong and right answers given to the questions; whereas t-test has been used in order to examine the students’ comprehension abilities of what they read in literary and didactic text tests. The opinions of Turkish education specialists have been taken by the researcher for the content validity of the tests. The reliability coefficient of the literary text test has been found as 0.89 whereas the reliability coefficient of the didactic text test has been found as 0.86.

Özet

Bu araştırmanın amacı, Ankara Üniversitesi Sınıf Öğretmenliği programında öğrenim gören öğrencilerin okuduğunu anlama becerilerini sınamak ve metin türü farklılıklarının okuduğunu anlama becerilerine etkisini araştırmaktır. Araştırmada “Betimleme Yöntemi” kullanılmış, veriler test tekniği ile toplanmıştır. Öğrencilerin sorulara verdiği doğru ve yanlış yanıtların analizinde yüzde, frekans ve aritmetik ortalama; yazınsal ve öğretici metinleri anlama düzeyleri arasında anlamlı bir farkın olup olmadığını bulmak için de t-testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan testlerin güvenirliği için ise SPSS-10 programı kullanılmıştır. Yazınsal metin testi güvenirlik katsayısı 0.89, öğretici metin testi güvenirlik katsayısı 0.86 olarak bulunmuştur.
