Abstract

It is known that some students use mathematical procedures with little or no understanding of the behind these procedures. These students believe that doing mathematics means performing pointless operations on meaningless symbols, and learns mathematics by memorizing. Therefore, both procedural and conceptual knowledges are necessary for success in mathematics. The purpose of the study was to investigate students’ conceptual and procedural knowledge on function of logarithm. A case study approach was used to gather data. The sample of this study was 80 secondary-school-students in Trabzon. Data were collected by using a test prepared researcher. The test consisted of open ended 34 questions. In conclusions, this study shows that students’ conceptual knowledge in logarithm was unsufficient while their procedural knowledge was acceptable.
