ANALYSIS OF THE QUALITATIVE STUDIES ON CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION IN THE FIELD OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN TURKEY (2010-2020)

TÜRKİYE’DE SOSYAL BİLGİLER ALANINDA VATANDAŞLIK EĞİTİMİNE YÖNELİK YAPILAN NİTEL ARAŞTIRMALARIN ANALİZİ (2010-2020)

Abstract

This study; it is aimed to determine the qualitative studies carried out in the field of citizenship education, investigate the tendency to study citizenship education as a social force utilizing an interpretative approach, and to guide the researchers on the subject. The data of this study, in which the basic qualitative research methodology was used, comprised graduate theses completed and the research articles published in the field of citizenship education between 2010 and 2020 and which are available in the databases of Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBIM) and Education Resources Information Center (ERIC). In this context, 24 graduate theses and 44 articles were reviewed. The distribution of these studies by years of publication, the qualitative research designs used in these studies, the issues that have been associated with citizenship education in these studies, study groups included, and the distribution of documents as well as the data collection tools utilized in these studies were examined. The data obtained as a result of this study were interpreted via content analysis based on the criteria determined by two researchers, and the numerical values of these data were graphed. In conclusion, an increase was observed in the number of theses conducted in the field of citizenship education via qualitative design during the years of 2018 and 2019, whereas a decrease was observed in the overall number of articles. It has also been concluded that researchers that have studied citizenship education have not viewed citizenship education as a social force and that they could not elaborate their research designs on the subject sufficiently.

Özet

Bu çalışmada vatandaşlık eğitiminde nitel olarak yapılan çalışmaların belirlenmesi ve bir toplumsal güç olarak vatandaşlık eğitiminin yorumlayıcı bir yaklaşımla inceleme eğilimini araştırmak, konuyla ilgili olarak araştırmacılara yol göstermek amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla temel nitel araştırma metodolojisi kullanılan bu araştırmanın verilerini 2010-2020 yılları arasında vatandaşlık eğitimine yönelik lisansüstü tezleri, ULAKBİM ve ERIC veri tabanında yer alan araştırma makaleleri oluşturmuştur. Bu kapsamda 24 lisansüstü tez ve 44 makale incelenmiştir. İncelenen çalışmaların yıllara göre dağılımı kullanılan nitel araştırma desenleri, vatandaşlık eğitimi ile ilişkilendirilen konular, çalışma grupları ve dokümanların dağılımı, veri toplama araçları incelenmiştir. Elde edilen veriler iki araştırmacı tarafından belirlenen ölçütlere gör içerik analiziyle yorumlanmış ve sayısal değerleri grafiğe dönüştürülmüştür. Araştırma sonucunda, nitel desende vatandaşlık eğitimine yönelik 2018-2019 yıllarında yapılan tez çalışmalarında artış olurken, makale çalışmalarında azalma görülmüştür. Vatandaşlık eğitimi ile ilgili çalışan araştırmacıların vatandaşlık eğitimini toplumsal bir güç olarak görmedikleri ve konuyla ilgili araştırma desenlerini yeterince ayrıntılandıramadıkları sonucu ortaya çıkmıştır.
