Abstract

Teachers and family members have important duties to give children the habit of reading and love of literature. One of these tasks is to be able to choose books suitable for children. Readability determines the level of readability of text, easy or difficult to understand by the reader. Readability is a concept related to language and is expressed as the understanding of the text by the reader. For this reason, it is important that the reader meets with reading materials suitable for his level during the reading process. In this study, the readability level of five stories in a 3rd grade story set was looked at. In the study, a screening method of a demoralized nature was used. The data source of the study was created by five story books called "Mathematical Pirates" written by Ayşenur ÇAMALTI. In the analysis of the texts, "Readability Formula" adapted by Ateşman to Turkish and "New Readability Value" formula of Bezirci-Yılmaz were used. As a result of the research; According to Bezirci-Yılmaz's formula, five stories from the Math Pirates story set are at an easy level; It was concluded that three of them were more suitable for 2nd and 3rd grade students, and two of them were more suitable for 3rd and 4th grade students. According to Ateşman's readability formula, it was concluded that four stories are easy and one story is in moderate difficulty. The easy story will provide easy reading for elementary school 3rd graders; moderate difficulty will also force students to read. In line with the results obtained, a study can be made in which the number of letters or syllable lengths are taken into account regarding the Turkish readability formula. In addition to determining the readability levels of the texts, an analysis can be made that takes into account the individual differences of the students in reading comprehension.
