Abstract

In this study, the place and importance of ney (reed flute) during the Ottoman period were researched. As a result, it was seen that ney was the most popular instrument in music and poetry. The stories related to the invention of ney, which was also a respectable instrument in the Islamic culture before the Ottomans, date back to the period of Prophet Mohammed. Ney has always been the most beloved and honored instrument of the Turkish music. Dedication of the first eighteen verses by Mevlâna Celâleddin Rûmî to ney in his Mesnavi, sanctified this instrument in the Mevlevi Order as well and caused it to gain a very prestigious place in the Ottoman cultural life. Ney was an indispensable instrument of both religious and non-religious music during the Ottoman period. While certain instruments became popular, some fell into disfavor and even became abandoned during certain times in the Ottomans, ney was used for centuries without an interruption. With the growth of Mevlevis in Istanbul towards the end of the 16th century, who were quite influential in the Ottoman‟s creating their own music, the significance of ney started to grow. During the 18th century, on the other hand, ney became an entirely Mevlevi instrument. The Mevlevi dervish lodges, which were in the position of music and literature schools during the Ottoman period, trained many brilliant names of music such as Selim III, İsmail Dede, and Sheikh Gâlib. Due to such reasons as Mevlânâ's starting his Mesnavi with ney and the ancient poets being mostly trained in these lodges, ney acquired a quite reputable place in poetry as well. The poets, who utilized music, which played an important role in social lives in the past, used music terms abundantly in their poems. Ney is the term that was used most in the Ottomanperiodpoetry.
