Abstract
In the light of three poems entitled The Music, A Fantastic Engraving, The Mask, which appear inthe first chapter of Spleen and Ideal of his book Flowers of Evil, it is possible to reveal that competentperson, whom Baudelaire conceals in himself in the domain of music, painting and sculpture. When one takes into account the considerable position of art and artists such as Delacroix, Wagnerand Manet in his work on literature, it becomes easy to comprehend the poetry of Baudelaire, whois a search for absolute beauty by means of formal perfection. The poet, who tries to reach the idealand to find the beauty by outreaching evil and the ugly, succeeds in finding an asylum for himself inarts, which give him the possibility to enrich his ideas and to ease all his pain, to reconcile modernitywith tradition, to combine abstract with the concrete and to decrease the intensity of the spleenby leaving the darkness of the subconsciousness behind. He can perceive the relation between auditory, visual and tactile sensations with the arts, which give him inspiration and show him the way. Baudelaire, who has a vast imagination described by himself as “quasi divine faculty”, “king of all faculties”, intends to be a lighthouse with his state of mind open to new horizons under the influence of the magic of art, which ensures the transfiguration of the real. In the creation of these three poems, the poet finds a way to surpass his own existence by glorifying the arts, of which he reckons himself “the inheritor”
