Abstract

THE MISUNDERSTANDING FROM MISCOMMUNICATION TO AN «ABSURD» DEATH As the choice of title implies, a story that doesn’t end well, Camus’ play The Misunderstanding (1944) ends with a tragic crime that can be attributed to the absence of communication between the protagonists made obvious through their ambiguous dialogues. This miscommunication which dominates the whole play constitutes the origin of the drama. Thus, in this article, we have examined the dialogues that are filled with enigmas, connotation, confusions and ambiguities from the point of view of the philosophy of the absurd to discover their profound/existential meanings. The language of this play as a source of misunderstanding is doomed to failure, because it will lead to a murder of the hero Jan, and two deaths, those of the mother and the sister. Here it is a question of annihilation due to the free will of the protagonists seeking to define their being and chart their own destiny, not waiting for the saving hand of a creator God that they defy
