Abstract
Sivas is one of the old settlement centers in Central Anatolia. It is a city that dates back to ancient times and has hosted many civilizations. Sivas has many cultural heritages from the past to the present. It contains valuable works especially in terms of handicrafts. Mankind has transformed different materials into useful products that are useful in daily life in order to adapt to the environment in which they live. Quilting is one of them. Quilting has existed in the lives of Turks since Central Asia. Quilts are made with very simple methods and materials to cover and protect from the cold. Quilts used for necessities have turned into handicrafts with social and cultural meaning over time. Quilt is one of the most necessary daily use items for the city of Sivas, which is known for its cold. Considering the periods when the weather was very cold in the past and the inadequacy of the heating systems of the houses, the importance of the quilt is better understood. In Sivas, the quilt has gained not only covering but also various functions that go beyond this: It has become an indispensable item of girls' dowry, the decoration of the maternity bed, and the show of the circumcision bed. A special quilt has always taken place in important periods of human life. In the past, wool obtained from animals raised by people or purchased from markets was used to make quilts. Preparing the wool and sewing the quilts were done by women. Today, both daily quilts and satin quilts for special occasions are made by professionals. It is possible to follow the skill of the quilt masters in the threads they embroider motifs. The quilt has gained a quality that gives social messages to the environment from the person or family using the quilt in ancient times. In connection with this, in the past, every young girl had at least one handmade quilt in her dowry. The higher the financial means of the family of the girl to be married, the higher the number of quilts she would give to her daughter. It has been tried to determine the subtleties of the art of quilting, which is one of the works where the need turns into art. Today, wool, cotton and synthetic fiber are used in quilt making. Motifs are made by choosing from the catalog. Masters draw most motifs from memory. Quilting profession, which was very popular in the past, is losing its importance today. The low income in quilt making and the inability to find an apprentice to continue this work are among the factors that bring the end of the profession. The interest in handmade quilts has decreased gradually due to the changes in the heating systems of the houses, the easy cleaning of the ready-made quilts and the less space they occupy. In this study, the subject has been focused on as this handicraft is on the verge of disappearing with the decrease of interest in handmade satin quilts, which have a deep-rooted history. It is aimed to record Sivas quilt making and transfer the taste of the past to future generations.
